Capula awarded further contract from Drax Power

Added on: 20/06/2018

Capula, an Imtech company, has been selected by Drax Power Ltd for the replacement of the main control elements on Unit 2 of the 660MW biomass fired power generating unit.

Drax Power station in North Yorkshire is the UK’s largest single site renewable power generator having upgraded half of the power station to use sustainable compressed wood pellets instead of coal – making it  Europe’s  largest decarbonisation project.

The project will see Capula replace the core process control systems responsible for the plant’s key functions including the feed control systems and turbine along with other balance of plant systems. Capula will replace the obsolete APACs equipment with modern Schneider based control technologies to ensuring the unit operates efficiently throughout the life of the plant.

Capula has had an excellent working relationship with Drax for nearly 25 years and has performed many modifications and enhancements to meet the evolving needs of the business, including the conversion of the units from coal to biomass renewable fuels in the early 00’s.

The contract was placed with Capula following successful completion of a project to implement new controls on Unit 1 at the power station, in a record breaking short outage period of 53 days.

‘Capula has installed the majority of control systems at Drax and consistently ensures the prompt return to service of our client’s most valuable assets’, said Richard Horton, Business Manager, Energy and Industry Sector. ‘We are pleased to support our client on yet another project at this key facility that plays such a vital role in helping to change the way energy is generated, supplied and used as the UK moves to a low carbon future.’
