Anita McFarlane, Commercial Director, Imtech Engineering Services North
‘I attended a careers fair at secondary school and heard about Quantity Surveying and decided that it was for me!’
How have you got to where you are today?
I took the traditional higher education route to my role, although this is not always necessary and indeed, wouldn’t suit everyone.
I definitely recommend a few years full time at university for the personal experience it presented me with, however there are many advantages professionally to doing a day release degree and working at the same time.
When I graduated I had few practical skills and little experience to draw on compared to the day release quantity surveyors who hadn’t yet graduated.
What are the responsibilities of a Commercial Director?
I am responsible for the commercial process, governance and ultimately, the profitability of the Engineering Services North business. I also sit on the Imtech Engineering Services North board.
It is an all-encompassing role which includes general ‘running a business’ considerations such as people, continual improvement, business and financial planning as well as influencing procurement and delivery.
What is the best thing about your job?
The best part of my job is the people I work with, both now and over the years.
Construction is full of colourful characters and the nature of the work moving from project to project gives you the opportunity to meet lots of them and exposes you to lots of different experiences.
